Is Democracy Real?

 IS DEMOCRACY REAL? (Analysis Part-1)

"Of the people, for the people, by the people" is one famous line to define democracy in a general sense. Let's take an example of contemporary drama of democracy in North Korea, every five-year interval there is voting held in North Korea, that is held "by the people, of the people, and for the people" but there is only one contestant Kim Jong-Un whom they have to vote. So, Is this the real sense of democracy? only these famous quotes are not enough for a healthy democracy.
Stakeholder of democracy is not only people but our leaders also, which means representative, multiple levels of government, multiple party system to maintain balance, strong opposition and regular interaction between the government and the citizen.
Recently India's rank in the democracy index deteriorates and ranked at 53rd in the "flawed democracy" category, so before giving the direct judgment on this I would like to draw your attention to the parameters given by EIU for the democracy index.

1. Civil Liberty: Is India deteriorates in civil liberty? is freedom or tolerance lacks in India? India with its diverse culture and social system creates harmony and balance from the starting and it is wrong to say that India's pluralism is intolerance but recent overregulation and unbalanced interference creates chaos in indian society. Examples of SMA(special marriage act) to regulate interfaith marriage, frequent Internet disconnection breach the freedom on the name of public order, frequent use of UAPA act.

2. Democratic political culture: Political culture of India can be traced from leader of opposition act 1977, where the leader of opposition in itself ranked equivalent to the cabinet minister and called as shadow prime minister in the British period, which well defined the political culture of harmony and even in modern days where 10% quota for the opposition is not achieved by the opposition but still LOP is there in the parliament to maintain the Democratic political culture, so it is wrong to say India is non-democratic political culture. opposition is there in Indian political system but it is inefficient and its aspiration to compete with the ongoing government is very less, which block the alternative or better option for citizen and monopolize the political system.
